The latest edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, now held every three years, kicked off in October in Alicante, Spain in October and concludes in Galway, Ireland July 2012.
During the race the six teams will sail over 39,000 nm (72,000 km) of the world's most treacherous seas in Volvo Open 70 boats via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Brazil, Miami, Lisbon, and Lorient France before the finale in Galway.
The nine month race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers - fearless men who sailed the world's oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.
